(SEATAC, WA.) – King County Executive Dow Constantine is not a happy camper these days.
On Saturday at a rally held at the federal detention center in SeaTac to protest the detention of asylum-seeking mothers there, Constantine said he’d just found out the day before that the county-owned airport, Boeing Field is being used by federal officials to separate asylum seekers from their children.
And since the county (i.e., taxpayers) owns the airport and the county never signed on for that duty, “I will do everything in my power to end this brutality,” said Constantine in a statement made Saturday at the airport.
The Trump era: defined by cruelty against children
On Saturday the Seattle Times ran an opinion piece called “The stunning cruelty of immigrant-family separations ,” which asks the question: ‘Who is comforting those terrified, crying children at night? Who is giving hope to their heartbroken, desperate parents, sitting in jail cells and not knowing where their children are?’
Indeed, who? The fact that a supposedly civilized First World nation like America is engaged in this cruelty against kids and families is yet another indication of the moral decay and the depths of the foul, immoral stench of right wing extremism that Donald Trump and the reptilian Republican lawmakers that do his bidding have sunk this once proud nation.
There is a darkness upon the land.
And since Trump and the GOP have brought us this far, well why stop here? This nation has sunk so far down into the worst basic instincts of predatory humans, why not just open a few concentration camps in the wasteland of Idaho where we can stick these kids and families just like America did to law abiding Japanese Americans in World War Two?
That’s not a big step to take for Trump and Company. C’mon guys. You know you wanna go all the way and get down and medieval on these brown-skinned people. Make em’ hurt so bad they wanna die.
Why do half-measures with this thing? Let’s have a few concentration camps with guard towers, barbed wire and scowling armed guards from Jeff Sessions’ Klan Country roots.
Yeah, that’ll teach them. That will have Jeff Sessions, the good ol’ country boy from Klan Country going to work with a big smile on his face every day.
From that Times piece mentioned above:
“What is truly horrible is that every day our government is forcing parents fleeing from repressive regimes to decide whether to seek sanctuary in the United States and give up their children or stay and face torture and death.
The rest of the world is stunned by what is happening in America, once the mouthpiece for human rights. No longer. The United Nations has declared that the U.S. is violating international law by separating babies and children from their parents trying both legally and illegally to enter the United States.
There are so many that a U.S. senator, Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, said he found children being warehoused. There are so many that children are being herded together in an empty Wal-Mart warehouse. Not surprisingly, journalists have been barred from interviewing the parents or seeing how children are treated.
Every parent knows the panic of losing a child in a crowded store or park, just for a few minutes. Imagine having your 18-month-old ripped from your arms because you asked for asylum in the U.S. from a gang in your homeland that vowed to kill you and your children.”
What in God’s name has happened to this country? We’ve become like animals. Trump has finally brought America down to his level. And that level is ugly, immoral, inhumane, law-breaking, scoffing at the rule of law and real American values.
Trump has taken this country to the dark side of a bad moon. We've become everything that most normal people thought America would never become.
May the good Lord help us all going forward.
