Hazelnuts from Oregon farm reportedly linked to a Salmonella outbreak
January 11, 2017

(McMinnville, ORE.) -- Hazelnuts sold from a roadside farm stand in McMinnville have been identified as the source of a salmonella outbreak, according to a report by Statesmanjournal.com.

Oregon health officials are urging anyone who bought hazelnuts from Schmidt Farm and Nursery, at 13940 SW Hwy 18, to throw them away.

The report says five adults became ill with a specific strain of Salmonella Typhimurium between Oct. 15 and Dec. 13, according to the Oregon Health Authority. None were hospitalized and all have recovered.

Three of those people recalled buying hazelnuts from the farm. The fourth ate hazelnuts from an unlabeled bag of partially shelled nuts, and a fifth was linked to the other cases after testing positive for the same strain of salmonella. Tests performed on nuts purchased at the farm identified the same strain of salmonella, according to the Statesmanjournal report.

About 20 percent of the nuts grown on the farm are sold at the farm stand, said Stephanie Page, food safety and animal health director for the Oregon Department of Agriculture. The remainder is distributed through wholesalers who treat the nuts to prevent salmonella, either by roasting or by using a chemical treatment.
