New law in Washington State will protect
tethered dogs

April 20, 2017

Man's best friend should not be tethered in an inhumane fashion. CLICK TO ENLARGE
(OLYMPIA, WA.) -- Bad dog owners, the cruel kind that chain or otherwise tie down dogs in an inhumane manner - such as denying them access to food and water, shelter etc. - are about to get a wake up call.

Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill into law yesterday that makes it illegal for anyone to leave a dog tethered for a "reckless" period of time without providing the animal with adequate access to food, water and shelter.

The legislation also says dogs have to be placed in a safe and sanitary area that protects them from excessive heat or cold.

The new statute will allow animal control officers to issue warnings or civil infractions for inhumane animal tethering.

After the bill's signing, the legislation's sponsor Republican Sen. Joe Fain of Auburn said the major plus in this bill is that now animal control officers will be able to assert themselves and take actions to protect man's best friend when people witness a dog tethered in an unsafe manner.
