Air Quality Burn Bans Lifted For 7 Counties In Washington
August 12, 2017

CLICK TO OPEN
(SEATTLE, WA.) -- The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) says air quality burn bans (not fire safety bans) have been lifted for King, Snohomish, Pierce and the other four counties listed in the graphic at right.

Air Quality vs. Fire Safety Burn Bans

Air quality burn bans are issued and enforced by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency when air pollution levels rise to unhealthy levels. Air quality burn bans typically occur during colder fall and winter months.

Fire safety burn bans are issued by the fire marshal when dry weather conditions heighten the risk of wildfires. Fire safety burn bans are generally called during the summer and can last for several months.

PSCAA is NOT responsible for issuing or enforcing fire safety burn bans. For more on fire safety bans, contact your county fire marshal or visit waburnbans.net.

Status statewide on wildfire smoke issues

There are still some fire safety bans in effect in the state. Contact your county fire marshal for more information on those.

According to fire safety officials, smoke levels have reduced to MODERATE or GOOD in most areas now. Winds have reversed and it is expected that the British Columbia wildfire smoke will blow east again for the next couple weeks.

That means a return to our more typical summertime "good" air quality.

The BC wildfires aren’t expected to stop until the fall rains come, so another high pressure ridge could return the smoke. But as tings stand now, the 2-week outlook continues to keep smoke away from Puget Sound.

The fire near Darrington is contained, but still smoldering. As a result, you may still see smoke levels that are MODERATE or even UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS there when the winds come from the northeast.
