Man shot and killed during shootout with police in Puyllaup
January 13, 2018

(PUYALLUP, WA.) -- Police say an unidentified man is dead as the result of a police shooting Friday evening at the Puyallup Recreation Center, located at 808 Valley Ave. Northwest.

Officials say the incident began just before 3:30 pm Friday when Fife, Washington Police got a report of a reckless driver in the 4300 block of 70th Ave. East.

The driver of the vehicles was reported to be swerving into oncoming traffic and stopping in the middle of the street.

A police statement says Puyallup officers were notified about 3:30 pm by numerous 911 callers of what appeared to be the same reckless driver and, similar to the Fife report, was said to be driving erratically, doing U-turns in the middle of the road and driving on sidewalks.

Then at 3:52 pm, according to that statement, a Puyallup officers noticed that vehicle "stopped in the center turn lane of the 800 block of Valley Ave. NW. The officer approaches the vehicle and determined it was unoccupied," but also saw a shotgun sitting on the front seat of the vehicle.

The officer then began canvassing the area of the Recreation Center and at 3:39 pm officers reported hearing a gunshot from an open space south of the recreation center after which officers from several police agencies, including Fife, responded to assist Puyallup Police.

The police statement says officers located a man crouched down behind a utility pole and appeared to be using the pole as "cover to shield himself from responding officers."

Police officers said they negotiated with the man for about 30 minutes trying to get him to give himself up and it was at that point that the man reportedly fired at least one round from a gun he had with him. Officers returned fire and the "subject subsequently died at the scene."

Police found a semi-automatic rifle next to his body. Five Puyallup officers and two Milton Police officers fired their weapons and per standard protocol all officers have been placed on paid administrative lead as the investigation into the incident moves forward.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Officials are working to identify the man and establish a motive or motives for his actions.
