Columbia County man killed, Tacoma man injured in Highway accident in Gig Harbor

(GIG HARBOR, WA.) – The Washington State Patrol says a young man from Columbia County lost is life early Saturday morning after the car he was driving crashed into another car on a highway in Gig Harbor, Washington.

The incident happened about 4:23 am Westbound on Highway 16 at Burnham Drive. The patrol report says a 2017 Ford Mustang was westbound on SR 16 just west of Burnham Drive in Lane two of two and another vehicle, a 2015 Nissan Altima was traveling on the same highway in the same direction adjacent to the Mustang when, for reasons unknown, the Mustang crashed into the Nissan.

The impact caused the Mustang to leave the roadway and crash into some trees where it came to a stop. The Nissan came to a stop on the right shoulder of the road, which was partially blocked by the accident for four hours.

Killed was the driver of the Mustang identified as 20-year old Mathew C. Estelle of Jackson, Washington. Jackson is a small unincorporated community in Columbia County which is in the southeast corner of Washington state.

Injured at taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital was the driver of the Nissan identified as Arthur D. Harvey, 63, of Tacoma, Washington.

The state patrol report listed the cause of the accident as “speed.” It was not known if drugs or alcohol were factors.
