Five People Perish In Explosion At Rental Cabin In Brinnon, Washington
June 11, 2018

(BRINNON, WA.) – Five people were killed early Sunday morning in an as yet unexplained explosion at a rental cabin in Brinnon, Washington.

Brinnon is a “census-designated place,” a tiny hamlet of just 800 or so people in Jefferson County located in the northwest corner of Washington.

A tweet Sunday morning from the Washington State Patrol said, “Tragic events in Brinnon early this morning. The #WSP Crime Lab is assisting in the investigation of the explosion at the request of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.”

The rental cabin is located near Canal View Street and Highway 101, the main highway in the area.

Brinnon Fire Chief Tim Manly said Sunday night the investigation into the blast “is finished, and no more information will be released until Monday, pending notification of family,” according to the Peninsula Daily News (PDN) which noted in an earlier report that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also investigating the tragedy.

Just before 6:00 am Sunday the Brinnon Fire Dept. in a news release said, ”During the fire suppression effort fire fighters located two bodies in the remnants of the cabin.”

KIRO-TV in Seattle reported that all of the dead belonged to the same family, although officials have not confirmed that at this time.

The Brinnon Fire Dept. said in its early Sunday morning news release neighbors, "Reported an explosion and stated the hillside was on fire and the house, a small rental cabin, was gone." The neighbors reported hearing the blast about 1:00 am.

The resulting fire after the explosion drew the response of fire units from six counties, according to the Brinnon Fire Dept.
