|HOW THE REST OF THE WORLD VIEWS THE RISE OF OLIGARCHS IN THE U.S.|
February 22, 2015
Ever wonder how people outside the United States view us and what's happening in this country in terms of (among other things) the continued slow, dismantling of the middle class and the rise of oligarchs to run things?
About nine months ago Al Jazeera, the middle east based news agency that over the years has become a force to be reckoned with in the west (there's not a major western news outlet that does not monitor Al Jazeera daily) produced an interesting segment in their "Empire" series.
Correspondent Marwan Bishara, in a rather fun tongue-in-cheek fashion examines "the rise and role of the new oligarchs and the decline of democracy in the United States and beyond."
Did you, as an American ever imagine in your wildest dreams you'd hear someone from another country talking about the "decline of democracy" in the U.S.?
And this at a time when many of our lawmakers in Washington keep telling us we're the greatest democracy in the world -- which flies in the face of cold, hard numbers from a number of studies.
At any rate, Bishara's piece is interesting to watch not because of its point of view (it's pretty obvious what he thinks of the whole thing) but for two reasons: (1) It's the kind of long form reporting on a very important subject Americans should know more about, that the vast majority of BIG American news media - that can afford to do this form of reporting and should do - does not produce anymore (possibly because they're part of the new oligarchy?) and (2) for how foreigners view what is happening to the "greatest democracy on earth."
