5,000-year-old skeleton discovered at construction site in Malaysia
April 20, 2017

5,000 year old human remains found in Malaysia
(GEORGE TOWN) -- A prehistoric human skeleton, thought to be at least 5,000 years old was uncovered during construction of a gallery for the Guar Kepah Neolithic site on mainland Penang on Monday, according to the New Straights Times.

Penang is a Malaysian state located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It has two parts: Penang Island, where the capital city, George Town is located and Seberang Perai on the Malay Peninsula.

According to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Global Archaeological Research Centre director Professor Datuk Dr Mokhtar Saidin, a skull, a femur bone and a rib cage were found beneath the floor of a house which had been recently flattened to make way for the gallery.

He said the bones were found 27.6 inches (70cm) underground as Public Works Department (PWD) backhoes were digging on Monday.

The newspaper report quoted Dr. Mokhtar as saying archeologists have yet to conduct scientific studies, "But we estimate it (the remains) to be around 5,000 years old. More details, such as how the prehistoric people lived, what they ate and their burial patterns, will be released once we complete the studies."

Mokhtar believes they could possibly find three skeletons at the site over time. In 2010 research at the same site yielded prehistoric shells, pottery remnants, tool remnants and food remnants from the Neolithic period, sometimes called the Neolithic Age, Era or New Stone Age.

It was a period in the development of human technology, beginning about 10,200 BC in some parts of the Middle East, and later in other parts of the world and ending between 4500 and 2000 BC.
