Armed man shot and killed by Thurston County Sheriff's Deputy

(THURSTON COUNTY, WA.) -- The Thurston County Sheriff's says a deputy shot and killed a man Tuesday night who had a gun and was acting "erratically."
The incident happened about 7:45 pm, according to a sheriff's office statement near Rochester, WA in the area of Highway 12 and Anderson Rd. SW.
The statement said deputies were dispatched to do a "welfare check" on a man in that area who was reported by a family member to have "left the residence acting erratically and armed with a pistol."
The man, a 55-year old Lakewood, WA resident was found by a deputy in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Lucky Eagle Casino.
The sheriff's statement said the man "exited the vehicle armed with a pistol and approached the Deputy while refusing orders to drop the weapon."
The deputy fired his hand gun hitting the man several times which brought the man down and neutralized the threat.
The deputy administered first aid to the man who was then flown to St. Peters Hospital in Olympia where he was pronounced dead.
The deputy was not hurt.
The incident is being investigated by several law enforcement teams including the Region Three Critical Incident Investigation Team, comprised of investigators from four counties as well as the Lewis County Sheriff's office, which is the lead investigative agency.
