Billionaire Republican, A High Roller Donor Now Giving His Money To Elect Democrats
April 16, 2018
No money for GOP this year from this billionaire
(NATIONAL) – Just how sick and tired of President Trump and today’s crop of not-your-grandad’s Republicans is GOP billionaire donor and Boston hedge fund billionaire Seth Klarman?
This sick and tired.
Klarman, a man who once “lavished more than $7 million on Republican candidates and political committees during the Obama administration, using his fortune to help underwrite a GOP takeover of the federal government,” according to the Boston Globe has been so shocked and dismayed by the rise of a President like Donald Trump – as well as “the timid response from the Republican-controlled House and Senate, which have acquiesced rather than challenge the president’s erratic and divisive ways,” - says the Globe, that Klarman is taking his money and funding Democrats with it.
And if that doesn’t make the GOP feel queasy about the mid term elections – along with the President’s historic low job approval ratings and a super-energized Democratic and left of center voting block – then nothing will.
According to the Globe report Klarmen has given about $222,000 since the 2016 election to 78 Democrats running for Congress. That’s based on federal election data from 2017 and a preview of Klarman’s first-quarter donations, according to the newspaper.
Klarmen gave a prepared statement to the Globe saying in part, “Republicans in Congress have failed to hold the president accountable and have abandoned their historic beliefs and values...for the good of the country, the Democrats must take back one or both houses of Congress.”
And in a bit of blow-back against the Trumpian empire over tax cuts the GOP gave billionaires such as himself, Klarman said he’s financing his new political donations using his share of the $1.5 trillion tax cut Trump signed into law late last year adding, “I received a tax cut I neither need nor want. I’m choosing to invest it to fight the administration’s flawed policies and to elect Democrats to the Senate and House of Representatives.”
