Detroit girl, 9, dies after routine tonsil surgery
January 09, 2017
(DETROIT, MI.) -- A Detroit mom, Sonia Gambrell appears to have had a premonition of sorts.
She was very nervous and feared something would go wrong with a surgery her young daughter was about have.
The night before, she couldn’t sleep and considered postponing a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for her 9-year-old daughter, Anyialah Greer, according to the Detroit News but "she steeled her nerves and made the drive from her home on Detroit’s east side to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Troy on Dec. 8."
The surgery was supposed to take just 40 minutes. Gambrell didn’t want her daughter to worry so she didn’t kiss her daughter before the procedure.
Three hours after they left the hospital, Anyialah was dead. For the time being, no one knows why. Autopsy reports are pending and not expected for weeks.
But medical reports obtained by Gambrell and shared with The Detroit News indicate the young girl could have had an obstructed airway, issues with anesthesia or an undetected heart condition before dying of cardiac arrest.
