(MONROE, WA.) – Monroe Police arrested a Gold Bar man following a high-speed police chase Saturday on State Route 2 in which the car he was driving crashed into another vehicle.
Just after 1:00 pm Saturday Monroe Police officers got a report that a stolen gold colored Mazda Miata was parked in a parking lot at the east end of Monroe near SR 2 and Main Street. The car had been reported stolen from Everett two days prior.
The car was quickly spotted by a police officer in the parking lot and there were two people inside.
“The vehicle left the parking lot at 1:10 pm, and a Monroe police officer attempted to stop the vehicle,” said a statement from Monroe Police. “The driver did not stop and rapidly accelerated to a high rate of speed as he continued eastbound on SR 2. The driver then hit the brakes just before he struck the back end of a Ford Excursion.”
Police say the driver of the Mazda then ran away from the vehicle, jumped over a barrier and tumbled down a 40-foot embankment, injuring himself in the process.
Officers went to the man’s rescue, placed him in custody and called for an aid car to treat his injuries and remove him safely from that embankment.
He was eventually hoisted on a stretcher by first responders to the roadway and was then taken to EvergreenHealth hospital in Monroe. A woman passenger was also taken there for treatment of a head injury.
Police say no one was hurt in the Ford Excursion when it was rammed by the Mazda.
The injured suspect, a 26-year man from Gold bar was scheduled to be taken from the hospital for booking at the Snohomish County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicular assault and “eluding.”
The 29-year old woman, an Arlington, WA resident is being investigated for possession of a stolen vehicle charge as well. “The driver is a suspect in in two other eluding cases in Monroe, additional charges are pending,” said the police statement.
