(TACOMA, WA.) -- It was a hard day Tuesday. Hard for the family, friends, the community at large and the many law enforcement colleagues of fallen Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel McCartney.
The 34-year husband and father of three children was shot and killed chasing criminal suspects late Sunday night.
On Tuesday afternoon a solemn and very long procession of police and fire vehicles led the hearse that took McCartney's body the 9 miles from the Medical Examiner's office in Tacoma to Mountain View Memorial funeral home in Lakewood, Washington.
Hundreds of people lined the streets to pay their respects as the procession made its way.
Deputy McCartney died at St. Joseph's Hospital early Monday morning from his wounds. He was shot after responding to a 911 call about intruders in a home in the unincorporated community of Frederickson, about 15 miles from Tacoma.
One of the suspect intruders, a man in his mid-30s was found dead at the scene. Another ran away but was captured later Monday morning. That man, identified as 32-year old Frank William Pawul was arrested in Shelton, Washington on unrelated outstanding warrants.
Detectives were able to develop probable cause to book Pawul into the Pierce County jail in connection with the murder of officer McCartney.
At 5:35 pm Tuesday night the Pierce County Sheriff's office tweeted, "Deputy Daniel McCartney - You are appreciated today & everyday. You are loved, respected, & missed beyond words. We will serve as you would have; we will be there for your family as best we can. #484 Gone But Not Forgotten."
Two Sheriff's Office deputies will stay with McCartney's body until he is buried. A funeral has been tentatively scheduled for Thursday January 18 with a time and location to be announced.
Legacy Fund established for the deputy's family
The Pierce County Sheriff's office said Monday that a Legacy Fund had been established for the family of Deputy Daniel McCartney.
Donations can be made online at http://tpcrimestoppers.com or at any TAPCO Credit Union. One hundred percent of donations go directly to McCartney's wife and three young sons.
This is the only official fund supported by the PCSD & his family.
