(NATIONAL) – More than 60% of Americans place the blame squarely on the United States Congress and President Trump for not doing enough to prevent mass shootings and murders of the type that erupted last week at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

That’s according to a new a new Washington Post-ABC News poll which also shows there is no rise in support for banning assault weapons compared with two years ago.

The poll was done after a lone gunman murdered 17 people at that Florida high school last Wednesday.

The poll results show:

~ More that three-quarters, 77 percent, said they think more effective mental health screening and treatment could have prevented the shooting.

~ 58 percent of adults say stricter gun control laws could have prevented the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, but also that there is no rise in support for banning assault weapons compared with two years ago.

~ One the question, “Is Congress doing enough to prevent mass shootings, only 10% said yes, 77% said no. When the same question was asked about President Trump, just 29% said yes he’s doing enough, 62% said no, not enough.

~ The party line division on guns is still as strong as it ever was: more than 8 in 10 Democrats and two-thirds of independents say the president is not doing enough to prevent mass shootings but more than 6 in 10 Republicans say Trump say he is taking sufficient action to prevent such bloodbaths.

That Post-ABC poll was conducted Feb. 15-18 among a random sample of 808 adults reached on cell and landline phones with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.
