Mountain Loop Highway reopened in time for Memorial Day Weekend
May 26, 2017

Mountain Loop Highway Re-Opens

(EVERETT, WA.)  --  Snohomish County Public Works, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service reopened the Mountain Loop Highway on Thursday May 25.

The road was opened to traffic in both directions from Deer Creek, east of Granite Falls, over Barlow Pass to Bedal Creek, south of Darrington

The well known "Loop" highway was closed on December 12, 2016 for its annual winter closure. A stretch of the road is gravel and closes each winter due to snow and road conditions. Once snow has melted and any necessary maintenance is performed it re-opens in the spring.

“We know there are a lot of campers and hikers who use this route in the summer months so we are pleased to re-open the Mountain Loop Highway in time for Memorial Day weekend,” said Steve Thomsen, Snohomish County Public Works Director. “Despite the large amount of snow we received this winter, we were still able to open it on time in comparison to past years.”

Each year the Road Maintenance Division coordinates with the U.S. Forest Service to perform any necessary maintenance on the road. This year portions of the gravel section of the highway was re-graded to fill in potholes and improve the road surface.

In summer months, on average, more than 100 cars each day use this route with up to 200 cars traveling each day on the weekend.
