Three suspects now in custody for four "spree killings" in 2016 in Federal Way
May 15, 2018

Federal Way Police Chief Andy Hwang at today's news conference
(FEDERAL WAY, WA.) – The Federal Way Police Department has recommended First Degree Murder charges for three suspects the department says are responsible for four murders which took place in 2016.

At a news conference Tuesday morning Federal Way Police Chief Andy Hwang said all the suspects are in custody at this time. The shooting deaths occurred in Federal Way between April 3 and May 10 of 2016.

Chief Hwang said a man named Justice Henderson is the primary suspect in the murders. He was 17 years old at the time of the killings. Henderson is currently in prison on an unrelated crime committed in Pierce County.

At the news conference Chief Hwang said, "Mr. Henderson went on a killing spree," adding that his first alleged victim was 19-year old Jeff McLaren, who was fatally shot on April 3rd of 2016 in a parking lot outside his apartment complex in Federal Way. Hwang said the motive in that case was robbery.

About five weeks later, Hwang said Henderson went on to kill three people and those murders were random, “by chance” he said. Hwang called Henderson a “spree killer.”

On May 9th 26-year old Alex J. Kelley of Seattle, was shot to death while he was on a porch of a Federal Way apartment complex about 1:00 am. Then on May 10th a Tacoma resident, Frank Cohens Jr., was found slumped over in a parked car in the 2200 block of South 333rd Street just after midnight. He had been shot multiple times just after midnight.

Also on May 10th, Adam Edward Gutierrez, 30, of Tacoma was out running with his dog when he was shot and killed just after 11:00 pm in the 1800 block of Southwest 356th Street.
