(STARTUP, WA.) -- The Sky Valley Arts Council recently recognized local resident Trey Shelton as the council's Volunteer of the Year for 2016.

Shelton was recognized for his work on the renovation of the old Startup Gym in Startup, Washington.

"Trey has worked tirelessly for the past year on the interior of the building providing many hours of professional expertise and physical work to make our event center the best possible structure," said the council in a statement.

In 2015 the Arts Council took on the project of renovating the old, weathered and neglected Sky Valley landmark in order to restore the building and turn it into a community center.

The building was built in 1937, the year that world famous aviatrix and international celebrity Amelia Earhart vanished over the Pacific Ocean during a circumnavigation flight.
