(MONROE, WA.) -- A man who crashed his car into a power pole in Monroe early Sunday morning was badly injured and had to be rescued by firefighters.

The incident happened just after 3:00 am in the 20500 block of Old Owen Road. Fire fighters from District 7 were dispatched on a report of a single vehicle collision.

When they got there they found a car crashed into the power pole but no driver could be found. The power pole was sheared off and the wires were across the roadway.

"Neighbors who reported the collision said they saw a person walking off from the accident," said a statement from Fire District 7. "The patient was found down a 100 foot embankment. Crews worked to stabilize the patient and safely bring him up the embankment."

The driver was a man in his 30's. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with unspecified injuries.

The Snohomish County Sheriff Department will investigate to determine cause of the crash.
