Chronicle staff

(SNOHOMISH COUNTY) – The Washington State Dept. of Transportation (WSDOT) says the Highway 2 preservation and repaving project between the I-5 interchange and Bickford Avenue in Snohomish is in full swing. Here’s what’s scheduled for the coming week:

Eastbound US 2 overnight closure from SR 204 to Bickford Avenue UPDATE NO LONGER NEEDED

  • Last night, contractor crews with Lakeside completed paving the mainline of eastbound US 2 after the SR 204 interchange.

  • Starting at 8:00 p.m. this Sunday night, the eastbound lanes will be closed for repaving work. The lanes will reopen every morning by 5:00 a.m. This nightly closure ends at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday (weather permitting).

  • Detour signs will take travelers to 20th Street Southeast during this closure.

Westbound US 2 overnight lane reduction

  • Starting Monday night at 8:00 p.m. the westbound Hewitt Avenue trestle will be reduced to one lane for overnight traffic. It will be back to two lanes by 4:00 a.m. every morning. This weeknight closure happens through Friday, May 25.

Eastbound US 2 overnight ramp closures - NEW NIGHTS

  • This Saturday night at 10:00 p.m., crews will alternate closing the eastbound US 2 ramp to SR 204, and the eastbound US 2 ramp to 20th Street Southeast.

  • The work will wrap up by 6:00 am. Sunday morning.

  • The same alternating closure will be in place overnight Tuesday until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

  • The SR 204 and 20th Street Southeast ramps will not be closed simultaneously.

20th Street Southeast ramp closure

  • Starting this Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. the ramp from 20th Street Southeast to westbound US 2 will be closed overnight.

  • The ramp reopens by 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

  • The same closure will be in place overnight Monday until 4:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The WSDOT follks know this is a lot to keep track of, so theyencourage you to bookmark/save the Snohomish County construction page for frequent updates to weekly closures.

Westbound US 2 Hewitt Avenue trestle closes at 7:00 pm Friday May 18.

The overnight work happening now in the westbound lanes is in preparation for the weekend closure of westbound US 2 from the SR 204 interchange to just before the 20th Street ramp.

The westbound lane closure is weather dependent. If it is dry next weekend, the lanes will close starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 18. (Get details on the work being done, and WSDOT needs the entire weekend in this WSDOT post). They will reopen by 4:00 a.m. Monday, May 21.

Closing the westbound US 2 trestle means WSDOT crews will also have to close the on-ramps from SR 204 and 20th Street Southeast during the weekend closure.

Detour during weekend westbound US 2 closure

WSDOT is getting creatibe with this alternate route. During the weekend closure, the agency is reversing traffic on 20th Street Southeast to go from eastbound to westbound traffic only.

Click this link to see a large MAP of the detour route.

20th Street is very narrow and crews cannot handle all the vehicles that will be displaced from the closure of the Hewitt Avenue trestle so WSDOT expects lengthy backups in the area and wants drivers to take time now to study all their alternatives. Staffers have listed some ideas in this new blog entry ahead of the May 18th weekend closure.

Again, this is a lot to take in so word o the wise: save the Snohomish County construction page to your favorites. WSDOT will post weekly updates on all project closures in the county on that page.

SR 9 at 108th down to one lane overnight

Every week night starting Monday at 8:00 p.m.SR 9 at 108th Street in Marysville will be down to one lane that will alternate directions until 5:00 a.m. the following morning. Crews have just started work on a new roundabout to improve the safety of that intersection. A flagger will be guiding traffic during this lane reduction.

Slough closures

This week brings multiple overnight closures and reductions to our I-5 project at the Ebey Slough Bridge. There’s a lot of them so head on over to the Snohomish County construction page for those details.
