(SULTAN, WA.) -- The Sultan City Council has appointed longtime resident and former council member John Seehuus to serve as mayor for the remainder of former Mayor Carolyn Eslick’s term.

Seehuus slides into the Mayor's chair as a result of Eslick resigning in October of last year to focus on her new gig as Washington State Representative for the 39th District. He was elected to the position at the council's regular business meeting late last month.

Seehuus has served on the City Council since 2004 in nonconsecutive terms and was reelected to his seat in November of last year.

That longevity means he knows where all the bathrooms are and where some of the bodies are buried (figuratively speaking) from the city government's interesting and not so glorious past which, among many other odd things, saw one mayor, a preacher at the time, resign under a cloud of controversy having to do with some not too polite Internet postings.

Rumor had it he left the area to sell knives on the Internet (which in itself deserves its own story). A former Police Chief also resigned a few years back, also under a cloud of controversy. Ah what tangled webs small towns weave. If those walls at city hall could but speak.

Seehuus has been down this road before. He was appointed mayor pro tem by fellow council members in 2006, 2007, 2015 and 2017.

“I am incredibly honored to serve as mayor,” Seehuus said. “The fact that my fellow council members felt confident enough about my abilities to appoint me to the position is tremendously meaningful to me."

As a result of his new job the council now needs to fill the council member seat he leaves unoccupied.

It's a gig that's more fun than a barrel full of rhesus monkeys doing stand-up at LA's Comedy Store after a full day of drinking cheap wine.

Get your application in by Jan. 31st to city administrator Ken Walker.

It's guaranteed to be a gas and a groove and three hoots.
